When you ask people if crime is getting worse, they'll say yes even when statistics show it isn't – and even when crime is actually dropping. This has been true in polling for decades. It's not something to base policy on, or a reason to let a dictator order a military occupation of American cities.
They've already run out of "enforcement" shit to do...
Partly this is to keep them busy. But it also serves the dual purposes of making government dependent on the military for continued operation, & humanizing the people they're going to send out to "pacify" opposing districts.
Crime stats are inanimate, emotionless, and only work on people who read, who now account for about 14 Americans. They're no match for rightwing propaganda, the endless lineup of crime podcasts, alpha males scared to even go to the Cheesecake Factory, and our innate tribal fear of The Other.

Judging by the cumulative polls, crime is up 20,000% since 1970. It’s actually down.

Most likely because TV is always flooded with crime stories, especially local news. You’d think Chicago was a war zone based on the lead stories on local TV. But they never report when crime is down.

It’s because FOX news constantly says that crime is out of hand. It’s a mantra or theirs so a ‘strongman’ will seem necessary. It’s brainwashing at its most obvious. We don’t live in massively dangerous times. We live in astonishingly safe times.

Media needs to be interviewing the national guard troops about the crime they are witnessing and stopping. A lot of those men and women are from small towns taught to fear “the big city” them going back and saying they picked up trash b/c crime was nonexistent sends a message.
All true. One nitpicky observation: I wish that, rather than call him a dictator, people would say something like "wannabe" dictator. The former feels like a fait accompli. The latter says we're still in the fight.
A lot of it has to do with media, I mean the local news doesn't air stories about happy, shining people. Also we have LOTS of Copaganda TV shows on the air where Detectives do the dirty work of the law. At least COPS was honest in showing police normally being bullying assholes.
I bet it lines up perfectly with the introduction of infotainment pretending to be journalism though.

People estimate the probability of an event by the ease they can retrieve similar events from memory. Media reports on crime play a major role here - if the numbers of reports incrase, the fear of becoming a victim of a crime increases and the real crime statistics have little impact.

It's because they are watching 7 different Cop Shows a week! They can't separate fact from fiction when asked the question about crime going up. Because last week in their mind, while they were sitting on the couch! They watched "all of this crime happen!" (It was really bad from 8 pm to 10 pm.)
Exactly this. Murder is ubiquitous in the entertainment people consume, the news they watch reports crimes (not crime statistics), and NIMBY complaints poison their social media.

Yes, for sure! It's called if it bleeds it leeds! Talking with some of my neighbors, they will bring up crime constantly. I will remind them that nothing has happened in over four years around here. (Briefcase in an unlocked car! Duh!) They are like, "Oh no! It's a problem!" (They see too much TV!)
With the internet, we have instant communication of crime. 30 years ago, there was actually more crime, but it wasn’t instantly in your face the way it is now.
If 24/7 reporting and sensationalizing of crimes that do occur stopped, polls would reflect reality.
