Jar Jar was annoying as fuck to the average star wars fan in the same way c3po was annoying as fuck to an adult in 1977. The "Yessir massir" criticism of Jar Jar, while valid, was a level above and not why most people hated him. That's my memory and I'm old enough to have seen them all first time

I too saw them all the first time in the theater. I guess liking queer coded characters is probably something that would make me not the average tho
