Do we prefer to Olaf Scholz as a PM or as Chancellor of Germany? Should we in Ireland refer to Kier Starmer as Taoiseach of the U.K.? There is only one title here, it is Taoiseach, not PM. Journalists need to respect our constitution.

German Chancellor isn’t correct either by that logic- it would be like referring to the Taoiseach as ‘Chieftain’. Taoiseach is a title whereas PM can be used as a descriptor just as one might use ‘the Head of Government’.

Our constitution literally says the Taoiseach is the Prime Minister.

ARTICLE 13 1 1° The President shall, on the nomination of Dáil Éireann, appoint the Taoiseach, that is, the head of the Government or Prime Minister.
