IMO, it’s that churches emerged as the last and only legal bastions for white supremacy after Johnson’s term. Many churches and new Christian movements emerged as a means to maintain segregation and exclusively white communities. It also offered a means to retain the benefits of the New Deal.

That is, rather than be made to pay taxes to fund social programs for non-white, non-Christian people, you elect a government to slash taxes, and then fund a church that serves as the social safety net for “your” people. Many white supremacists can’t distinguish between racism and their church’s.

I’d add that charitable giving has all but sky rocketed from where it was 60 years ago. Charitable giving is now seven times higher than it was before the Civil Rights Era.

This is (or has been) a legitimate grant in place for many years. It has been an important avenue for synagogues and Jewish community centers, largely, to harden their buildings and prevent tragedies like we saw last week. Having written 4 of these grants for my synagogue and received funding twice,

I can attest that the process is structured and carried out with serious oversight. We have benefitted by getting video cameras, lighting, safety glass on our windows, better exterior doors, and currently building a large gate. It’s made us safer.

DHS gives grant money to states, states reimburse organizations based on receipts and proof of payment for approved expenses. Really hard to cheat this system. HOWEVER this year there is language in the application saying orgs have to attest that they don’t help

immigrants or practice DEI. The grant has not dropped yet, so we are waiting to see if that changes before we decide whether to apply. I know everything coming out of this admin is poison, but it’s really easy to google NSGP and see how it fits in.
