Can anyone help me with what process is going on here please? On the back of the photo it says “cotton workers”.

I think that they are cotton gins, part of a process to remove seeds from the cotton, comb it, then bale it. Interestingly, the sacks say the material has come from Southern Rhodesia, which was a big supplier of cotton.

Thanks! They seem to have some sort of extraction device to get the dust out of the air???

Yes I saw that but they seem a bit high. I wondered if they were doing the reverse - blowing air out to help separate the strands before being fed into the machine.
