5-8 Mrs Chippy Monument, Karori Opossum World, Napier (9) Carterton Stonehenge The Tiakitahuna Rocket (18)
I’m surprised to learn that Opossum world is still a thing and that anyone regards the Tiakitahuna Rocket as anything other than a large signpost of a major T-Junction.
I dunno. The Stonehenge looks pretty exciting. Maybe if they'd employed some artists rather than the local concreter for design would have been better.
It didn't place in the top 32 which meant it had too much whelm
That's a relief. There's hope for the place. Australian tourism hasn't recovered from Pissweak World. youtu.be/75O1ctUfR0I
Actual Stonehenge is excitement underwhelming so a fake one had no chance
Damn.
9-12 Red Post, Culverden (2) Moeraki Boulders (32) The Wairoa Lighthouse Square Kauri Tree
13-16 Slope Point, the Catlins Dargaville Stump (14) Castle Pamela, Tirau Civic House Nelson (23)
There's a similarly attractive monument in the Upper Hunter Valley, where a poorly made wooden Coal Truck is mounted atop a significant stump. I'd share an image, but geolocators make this inadvisable.
17-20 Fantasy Cave, Dannevirke Dunedin Teeth Sculpture Deka Sign, Huntly (5) LOVETAUPO sign (24)

Some very large questions for me. Dunedin giant teeth: why? Is this the best we’ve got? And the face on the Mary statue?!
"Underwhelming"
I hate those teeth so much.
they are pretty rough
33-36 Beetle Mania, Cromwell (22) The Whale Fossil & Lookout at Milburn Corrugated shepherd, Tirau (27) Sheepworld, Warkworth
37-40 Woodville Organ Museum (12) Chocolate museum in Napier Wellington Cable Car Teapot Land, Owaka (20)
Harsh on the Moeraki Boulders, I found them fascinating. The rest I have no recollection of so must have been good!
41-44 Ohakune Parsnip (and other veg figures) (10) Te Awamatu Space Centre Hawera Water Tower Kumara Box, Dargaville (17)
It's worth noting that the first iteration of the Wind Wand was *too* exciting: the first storm that hit made the wand vibrate at a frequency that blew off the top half of the globe. It looked like a martini glass on a stick.
I vaguely remember something about that. Anyway it wasn't nearly underwhelming enough to feature high in the poll!
I reckon that underwhelming Big Things is very much a Kiwi trait - can't be seen bragging about something too stupendous, after all. Wouldn't be proper. 🫢
I love some of these so much - the parsnip is definitely my favourite creepy big thing - he is still to appear on the threa
Ooh, the Bucket Tree! Went to a very fancy restaurant beside that imaginatively called the Bucket Tree Restaurant. Well, it seemed fancy to me in 1986.
I can find the Bucket Tree Restaurant mentioned in council archives but it doesn't look like it has been active for a while. Where else did you go in NZ?
I lived there for the first 23 years of my life, so a lot of places! Went to the Bucket Tree Restaurant while attending the regional final of a one-act play festival with the New Plymouth Little Theatre team, who were performing Pinter's A Touch of Alaska.
Right! I spent the first 33 years of my life in England so sort of reverse lives going on!
Swapsies!
Yay for Huntly!
Yes indeed, quite worth the day trip!
Awww, I love the Moeraki boulders.
They did have a bit too much whelm to compete for the big prize
If you’ve got the Moeraki Boulders then you’ve got to also include the Punakaiki Pancakes, surely?
But in big seas there are salt-water spumes and underground rumblings that you can feel through your feet! Much whelm, very wow.
(I know. I think they’re amazing!) 🤩
I STOPPED TO PHOTO THE RED POST AFTER I NOMINATED IT. BUT LOST THE PHOTO. And haven't since, because Culverden.
I'm sure it's still there if you want to plan your holidays around it!
Unbelievable TripAdvisor has only three things and The Red Post is not mentioned. This isa travesty!
And scanning other search results, well I'm not in the market for a new car and if I were, maybe a more modern car than the Escorts advertised
If it is returning escorts, maybe you need to check your search history
I’ve always wondered wtf about opossum world - we have possums, not opossums, in NZ
I loved the Paua Shell house. So glad I got to see the real place before they removed it.
