Yes, that's the point Jesus made when he said that we will know his disciples by their love. He could have said, by their religion, but he said by love. It's love that matters, not religion. In truth religion is the antichrist because they are the ones who conspired to kill Jesus to keep power.
IMO religion has always been about control and has never been about compassion.
The deist founders of this country recognized and knew and warned us repeatedly, they did what they could to prevent Christians or religion from ascending to power. They knew and warned us…Christians were, are, and always have been a threat to freedom and democracy. Always.
I remember a study back when I was in college where the hypothesis was that if an authority (priest) tells people "Don't be racist" and "Don't be sexist" and a series of similar statements along those lines they would be less of a bigot to any person you didn't mention, but the opposite was true.
Translation: if your pastor tells you to be kind over and over, and to not be cruel to women or Jews etc, but they never say anything about gays, you probably feel that's a green light to be as cruel as possible to gays. And Christians demanding punishment for gays led to us getting fascism.
