Maybe some shoddy data-center-feeding nuclear plant on the island goes into meltdown and RI calves the state off to dodge the expenses. The remaining residents are *pissed* and go full GOP.

Or just make it some horribly transparent Kennedy-supported move to get Nantucket and the Vineyard into a separate “New England Islands” state. You could even have them try to call it Kennedy! I’m already getting way too into this.
