I've tried growing them in Florida and they don't like our summers. I'm planning to try in North Carolina next year. I think they'll be nice with my daylillies and hydrangeas up there

I lost all my hydrangeas 2 years ago to a fungus. I put butterfly bushes in their place. So far so good! Daylilies do very well here.
...and I can't keep a butterfly bush alive no matter what I do
Do you mean buddleia? They grow as weeds here, on any scrap of building site or urban wasteland, and even out of chimney stacks!
The very same. And no need to rub it in by reminding me that they grow like weeds there. I've spent a good part of my gardening budget on them over the years and have nothing to show for it. Most died within the same season I planted them
Aaaugh! What does the damage? Weather or soil?
It's just my own personal curse. I've tried them in Central Florida and in North Carolina. I do all the recommended things. It's one of two things I've never been able to grow well. The other is African violets. They also die no matter what I do
This is the only butterfly I have seen so far this year...on my butterfly bush...which was planted where my hydrangea used to be.
I've noticed a lot of tiger swallowtails this year, and even more black swallowtails. But the monarchs don't seem to be as numerous this year in my gardens, and I have more than enough milkweed for them
