5-7-5 adds a discipline I lack, it would be difficult to abandon. Syllabic rhythm, taskmaster of the western world.

I write using both approaches. Sometimes using 5-7-5 would be quite stifling and make the immediacy of the poem stale. I’d recommend reading among others, Jack Kerouac’s take on why abandoning 5-7-5 for English writers is appropriate and adheres even more to Basho’s style.

I have seen so many various versions..7-5-7, just 3 lines with short words, etc Haiku is what it means to you. I personally stay with 5-7-5, but that's just a rhythm I hear in my head
