Or if I dated someone who is turned off by needless pretense.
If you can only use your college level vocabulary in a way that is needlessly pretentious, sure. A pity, but sure.
If your EQ is such that you are incapable of meeting people where they are and go from there (generally the difference between a baseline HS vocabulary and a baseline college vocabulary is a distinction without that much of a difference) then yes, that is a pity.
Well, 39 years successfully teaching middle schoolers would suggest I'm perfectly capable of meeting folks where they are. I guess I just never dated anyone turned off by intelligence or language skills. As I wouldn't want to, that worked just fine.
