Asthma is disqualifying. Any active asthma (even controlled) would bar someone from service. I was a 3 sport athlete (including 2 endurance sports) w/very mild controlled asthma, but had my appt to the Air Force Academy yanked the moment they found out I had it. Doesn't matter that it's "treatable".
And this is what I call an absolute shutdown.
I joined in 1984 and my recruiter Told me to lie, and lied for me, about having asthma. It was an absolute deal breaker for the draft.

I keep telling my husband that our mild asthma kid will be D/Qed immediately because he was diagnosed in a military treatment facility. I'm shocked he even gets mail from the recruiters.
Yeah, if it’s been diagnosed, unless no symptoms for years, they’ll get DQ’d. My dad (1st Lt/silver star/2 purple hearts) tried to get a waiver for me to join still, but no chance. Re: recruiters… they aren’t getting medical reports 😃 just lists of young people.
Oh yeah. We’re just getting the mail and it’s addressed incorrectly (middle, first, last). I’m sure I will have to field a few phone calls later in the year.
