That's unfortunately the context we're in, but precisely because antitrust law was not applied – the part that recognises that some businesses have both become essential and naturally concentrate, so need extra governance to ensure justice. This was 19C, early examples were telephones & electricity.

This bleeds into another debate too. I'm not sure that Twitter treated as a utility is that much better because the service is much more versatile — and therefore shaped — than electricity or phones. But yes: we can build social media infrastructure that works right. Like AT!
