Everyone wants K.I.T.T
No I don't think so. They want to merge with and be empowered by and yet command a superpower. Did you notice the champaign scene in the video?
OK, I agree with your conclusion - most folk want to control a superpower (I can't drive ;-) so I'm poor at commenting on that) but I don't see AGI being that. Cars are very much an extension of your own body. AGI very much isn't? At least in its current form?
I think somehow they still feel a part of it. But it's also one of those things – you don't build your own car, but you feel empowered by it. You find the song funny, yet truthful if you do drive (& I only drove when I was a teenager, I haven't even had a license since my MA one expired in ~2005.)
So if you can't understand why we feel that way with cars, then we may be misled by anthropomorphism of the AI products to not understanding why people love them, and the celebrity AI "makers" and makes. People somehow want to merge with and codominate through these things.
Have you ever met Steve Worswick the guy who always used to win the Loebner prize for best human emulating chatbot in the pre-LLM days (Mitsuku, now Kuki). I always found him fascinating on chatbot anthropomorphism (he spoke at a few confs for me in '18).
If you can entice him to Germany or just chat to him, I suspect he learned more than the modern folk ever do doing RLHF by hand for thousands of people. And Mitsuku (AI Markup Language) was good. Best up until ChatGPT3.5 perhaps?
No I don't think I ever met him. Wow, great idea.
