thanks, that’s really interesting! I can very much see how having to click past pages of lesser elections would put off less engaged members who don’t know the candidates in those

I'm a bit confused about this: did the voting for the Co-leaders take place at the same time as the voting for Holyrood candidates and the results were just announced weeks apart, or were there two separate ballots?

Separate ballots! What happened at the same time was the vote for all of the party's internal roles, e.g. committee conveners and members etc, because the Greens do their Co-Leaders every two years as part of that normal set of internal elections.

Ah. Well, that explains the confusion on the part of the SGP member in this household. He thought he'd already done all his voting (because he definitely voted for the MSP candidate rankings). Maybe I'm confused about that, but he also sounded somewhat unsure when I asked him a few weeks ago.

MSP candidate ballots have previously taken place about 18 months pre-election but were later this time - I'm no longer involved so can't say for sure, but I would assume because we didn't actually know what the new Holyrood regional boundaries were going to be until around May

Given that, I'm wondering if turnout was higher for the MSP candidate ballots. If it was, maybe the confusion between the two ballots/voting fatigue played a part in lowering the turnout for the Co-leader vote. But I could be on completely the wrong track based on a sample size of just 1 person 😅

Would be an interesting comparison but you’d have a turnout figure for each Scot Parl region since members only vote to select MSP candidates for their region. And I imagine there could be some wild variation in those numbers across the country tbh.

Partly because the boundaries issue delayed the MSP elections with knock on effects, and partly because the necessary constitutional changes took time to implement.
