There was absolutely no one like her. I was fortunate to get to meet her
In 1991, I was a delegate to a National Planning Meeting for a March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Substantial divisiveness among the groups led to a boiling point where the planning meeting was about to fall apart. 1/3
NYC activists wanted to celebrate the 25th anniv of the Stonewall Riots and feared competition for attendees. During a break, I asked Urvashi Vaid and two other leaders to consider a compromise. My hand-edited proposal shows how difficult coalition building was. 2/3
Ultimately, all of the parties agreed to proceed with planning for both events and we had a National March on Washington in 1993 and a Stonewall Celebration in NYC in 1994. 3/3
Also, I received the highest honor of my life that day when Urvashi named me an "Honorary Lesbian".
Thank you for these vignettes; we’re learning from them. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you. Brilliant law school classmate, obvious from day one.
Thank you for this Dana. Indeed, Urvashi was a powerhouse activist and fierce social justice warrior. She is deeply missed. I had the honor of photographing her numerous times. A delightful person.
❤️❤️❤️
