I do think that's the case but in a way where "yeah no duh that'll happen" when you consider that "guy who has chance to win" is probably gonna push harder and be more likely to crash than someone who's ceiling is 10th, especially in a series with legit wheel to wheel racing throughout the field.

I feel like F1 conditions people to believe that the only reason you'll crash is because of skill issue, rather than racing incidents, because F1 barely has racing to incidentise.

I made a similar point at the dawn of the NextGen era in NASCAR, that people were gonna call drivers bad for racing incidents and simple things that happen with difficult and close driving cars, after 5ish years of poor G6 racing on longer tracks. Similar in IndyCar v F1
