1/ YES! That's what I'm getting at w/ all my yelling. We are learning that our own family, friends, coworkers, etc are absolutely HORRIFIC people, the UGLIEST people inside their heads and hearts the past 10 years or so. Black/Jewish ppl ALWAYS KNEW THIS. We were insulated from it.
That’s the hardest part -realizing that the people who are closest to you are aligned with an insane fascist. I knew my relative had deeply sexist ideas (from arguments in the past) but it’s a whole new experience to fully acknowledge the profound and downright immoral ideas of humans around us.

I can tell you something about this. I’m a survivor of childhood sexual assault. I’ve lived in the North and the Deep South. Moving to the South was horrific because of how my story was totally disbelieved. Being a tiny blue dot in a sea of self righteous, yet deeply hateful people is lonely.
One thing that is different about the current political climate is that the level of hostility is far worse. It’s not that the cruelty wasn’t there the whole time- just that his vulgar demeanor gives people permission to be awful. I cried when he was elected. Looked into moving to Canada
ohhh absolutely. It was swept under the rug until someone gave permission for it. And depending on a lot of things you can be VERY insulated from it and never see it until it's too late (especially marginalized that vote GOP.) I'm sorry about your trauma. I hope you get to a better place. ❤️️
2/ I'm surrounded by these people too, a sort of "Missisippi of the North". My strategy is the best offense is a perfect defense. Know your info, but don't go out to argue w/ your fellow Reds. But! if the Reds talk to YOU about it or try to feel out your politics, hammer away and let em have it.
3/ fin? i've had goofball Reds bother me about things like masking for COVID. I *firmly* said it's for my FAMILY. Can't stand there and complain about FAMILY, right fellow Red "family guy"? So it goes. Use their own words, their language. Some have never heard their words used like that before.
