After skimming through dozens of clean eating breakfast recipes, I have a confession. I… don’t like smoothies. I don’t enjoy the texture, I would rather eat the fruit and yogurt. Am I even American?

I like smoothies in the summertime. It’s just too hot.
I, too, prefer solid food for all meals. Plain regular yogurt, Bob's Red Mill muesli, banana, maybe blueberries. Is coffee considered to be "clean?"
I have no idea, I was just looking for something to replace the overpriced sugary bars I was using as a go-to.
Sorry, my arch irony in asking that question didn't come through--too early in the morning, I guess.
No worries. I view coffee as the drug it is, though. Which is to say, give me my hit as cheaply and easily as possible without those damn pods
3-6 cups of coffee a day reduces your risk of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and dementia! 😁
But my bladder and kidneys!
You can get new kidneys but not a new brain?
I am not debating the relative hierarchy of organs on Bluesky, thx
Fair and probably wiser than I. I'll keep drinking my coffee though (low-caf)
Yogurt is very American.
(Bulgarians rise as one)
We steal from the best.
Personally, I like toast.
I am making a smoothie right now! Because I have to use these strawberries before they go bad, and I don't feel like making strawberry shortcake (the only other thing I know how to make with strawberries). No protein or wheat germ or anything nasty added. I don't do them on a regular basis, though.
Yeah, they definitely work for a lot of applications, just not for me
I keep seeing tips like this”just add protein powder to your morning smoothie!” But… I like to chew and I don’t like to break out the blender for anything less than its sacred purpose of making cashew cheese silky
I have mixed protein powder into yogurt with pretty good success, and then added the fruit and texture (muesli, nuts, etc) to the bowl. Who wants to hear a blender first thing in the morning?
(Plus commercial smoothies and smoothie mixes are a very easy product to healthwash and hide tons of sugars and other things. Good thing the food industry is so honest and forthright and would never do such a thing)
Aren't they required to provide nutrition information? If you're in the US and have evidence that they're falsifying that information, you can get a reward from the govt.
There are all kinds of marketing and packaging gimmicks that give a halo of health to an ultra-processed product. This has been discussed and exposed repeatedly but the fact is, most people do not flip the packaging to look
Ah, I thought you were claiming a nefarious plot to hide actual ingredients, not just reliance on people not to care to look at what they're holding. (A boyfriend once insisted they inject individual oranges with corn syrup before squeezing so they don't have to label it😄) Carry on!
It is a nefarious plot, really, because they are using every trick in the book to make you look anywhere BUT the label they are legally required to include, but they are getting away with it, so no need to inject low profit fresh fruit. People buy their sugar happily in Protein Power Health Bars
everyone has different tastes! i for one don't really care for bacon or other pork dishes which gets a lot of cishet men in this part of the country very upset i'll drink all your smoothies for you, though.
Agree. Fam nags about smoothies but I’d rather chew my strawberries Have read labels of “smoothie” powders; I guess more convenient than really eating a meal if you’re pressed for time.
I just can’t abide the blender noise in the morning. 💥🫨
Yeah, I don’t want to do ANY work for my food in the morning that’s more complicated or requires more cleanup than a toaster
I like smoothies but I also have a lot of texture issues with other things so I can understand why you might dislike it. It reminds me of my disagreement with my father about instant versus cooked oatmeal. I like having texture and something to chew and he likes library paste.
Yes, steel cut are the best oat but the cooking time is interminable
We are of the same mind on this. I eat a banana, have a few scoops of yogurt, have a small handful of berries. I don't see the point of dumping it all into my blender, which is only another object to clean. It's not faster.
And I find the texture to be unpleasant
It can get gritty. I do make smoothies sometimes, usually because I get impatient waiting for frozen strawberries or blueberries to thaw. Blending skips a few steps in the process. But I am not fond of the grit. I literally grit my teeth and bear it.
Honestly i just eat tofu soup
Then eat the fruit and yogurt. Throw in some bacon for protein. That’s American AF!
Would you be okay having some oatmeal with your fruit and yogurt? www.whatemilysaid.com/2015/01/over...
Bolshevik.
It’s why I like the smoothie’s sexy cousin, the açaí bowl. Which is basically the same but with fruit chunks and eaten with a spoon.
I hate bananas, which almost entirely cuts out smoothies. Anyway, I'd rather just have yoghurt with muesli or granola. Maybe some berries on top if I'm feeling fancy, or a couple of dried apricots if I'm not
They’re nice for hiding a bunch of healthy stuff in if you don’t like healthy stuff. I’ll eat kale on its own though. My usual breakfast is oatmeal, peanut butter, and chia seeds
Yeah, that’s how I feel: if it’s the only way to get produce down, go for it. But I like to chew mine
I think smoothies are FINE, but it’s too much like baby food. Instead of eating distinct things with their own flavor profiles and textures, blend it in to a slop and chew it, you toddler.
My daily, with a mixed grain muffin with almond butter, is Misugaru (which sounds Koreanglish to me). It needs a 'shaker' thingy, doesn't mix easily but is fluid when shaken mykoreankitchen.com/korean-multi...
I find when I make smoothies I make way too much smoothie. It's hard to gauge how much I'm making. I'll stick to my overnight muesli in jars with fruit and yogurt
When I was in college I had to bicycle everywhere and often didn't have time for lunch the way classes were scheduled. Food wasn't allowed in lecture halls, but drinks were (you can't disallow drinks in a desert) so I used to drink smoothies to get lunch during classes.
I like myself a pure fruit smoothie every now and then, but I must confess I don't really care for anything with added dairy.
Wait, you made it to the recipe? I’m still scrolling through the long personal anecdote about the first time they had a smoothie.
Me vs my husband every morning. I’m all for the fruit and yogurt!
Ehhhh! I've got my doubts, but at this point it may even be a good thing. I'm tending that way myself though I do love a good smoothie!
