Once knew a church lady who insisted it was a sin to wear jeans to do yardwork on church grounds because jeans are "dungarees" and that comes from working in dung so it's disrespectful. (It's actually a Britishized pronunciation of the Hindi dũgrī and the Urdu dungrī)

Ooo ooo ooo and the push to ban anyone from saying “hate” re: frivolous matters of taste. “I hate mayo” was a sin

Just looked it up and it appears the term "jeans" is fairly new historically speaking; "dungarees" goes back to the 17th century though it's not settled whether or not dungaree fabric itself is a precursor to what we now call denim, a contraction of "sergé de Nîmes" (serge from Nimes).

I remember when everyone called jeans "Levi's" though it properly (especially according to the IP lawyers) refers only to the brand of jeans produced by Levi Strauss & Co. originally of San Francisco (are they still based there?).

I was unfortunate enough in university to have a passing association with someone who bought into the idea that "hello" was a reference to hell. He ended up humiliating himself with his "heaven-o" thing badly enough that he gave up and never mentioned it again.

It's crazy how far people will go to make completely innocuous things offensive for literally no reason.

Yeah, the offense comes first, they’ll get to the reason later

When I worked at a grocery store, we had a customer who insisted we stop selling pork butt because the name was offensive to her. Didn’t matter that it’s the common term for a cut of meat from above the shoulder, she was convinced we were selling pig ass at the meat counter
