So here's a question. Without knowing anything else, if you are offered a breakfast choice of waffles, pancakes or french toast, which one do you pick?

Ooh! I'd pick french toast, as simply my favorite of the three.
Waffles. More work so I'm less likely to make them.
Also, oddly, harder for a restaurant to screw up.
I had no idea. Would you be willing to explain why?
Just in my experience as a customer! I've more often gotten soggy pancakes or French toast. Possibly because waffle irons have timers?
French toast!
This is a fixin's dependent question. Waffles if there is fruit and other stuff to fit into all the square holes.
French toast
French toast
Embracing the power of AND, here.
French toast
Since I'm gluten free I would refuse the breakfast
Pancakes. We make french toast for dinner periodically and no one else’s can compete with my husbands.
Waffles! Mostly because I don’t make them as often as I’d like due to laziness.
French toast is an obsession of mine so this is an easy question. 😂
Waffles.
Mood and topping dependent: fist choice would be between pancakes and waffles, followed by French toast. It really depends on whether I trust the waffle will be GOOD. Pancakes over bad waffles, but GOOD waffles win.
And if it is, say, on a buffet, I’m going for the eggs first because I will want the protein. Then followed by whichever looks least floppy/terrible, so likely pancakes.
I'm a lot pickier now that I own a Mickey Mouse waffle iron and have sourced Golden Malted mix, so I can make my own Mickey waffles at home.
Why must I suffer this cruel choice?! 😭
This is a very high-risk decision. The French toast could be eggy. The waffles could be soggy. The pancakes could be tough. I have to glean information from my surroundings. Am I in a diner? Pancakes. A fancy hotel? Waffles. Grandma’s house? French toast.
Waffles
Right this moment the answer is pancakes.
Depends on what I want today?
Waffles!
Pancakes. I’ve had soggy waffles and French toast that was basically scrambled eggs, but pancakes are harder to screw up.
Likely default to waffles but realistically I would likely ask some clarifying questions instead (like "real or Eggo?"), and my answer might change if we had waffles the day before.
French toast because you always go for the thing that takes mucho effort to get right if doing it yourself. See the rule of making croissants from scratch.
Pancakes for me, though that’s a pretty tough choice 😄
Waffles. Less likely for a waffle iron to have mammal meat contamination than a griddle.
Pancakes because I can make French toast myself. Waffles can be too dry.
Waffles, if I know nothing else. Because I'd have to ask what kind of bread they're using to make the french toast.
Waffles. Because I lack a waffle iron at home.
Pancakes unless I know what sort of bread is used in the French Toast. But I much prefer eggs for breakfast.
French toast
EVERY. DANG. TIME
Waffles are just pancakes with abs.
French toast, although preferably a savoury version rather than sweet
Pancakes is the safest move, but I’ll go with waffles because I can tolerate soggy waffles and the upside they are good to excellent is there. French toast has the highest variability in quality but also the most potential to be outstanding.
I don't care it's not bacon.
Pancakes
Think in this case I gotta go pancakes, but no more information makes this a very fraught choice (as I'm the kind of guy who usually knows what I'm ordering before I walk into a restaurant...)
Pancakes without hesitation.
Waffles
Pancakes. For me it's the safest choice to get something I'm willing to eat.
Hmm. Waffles are the most topping dependent, so they're out, even though the waffle itself is the hardest to fuck up. Mediocre pancakes can usually be salvaged by the application of concerning qualities of butter and maple syrup, but we don't have any guarantee those are available. So, french toast.
This was precisely my thought process too
I guess it says something about me that I am happier at the thought of choking down bad french toast that simply could not be salvaged than pancakes that COULD be improved if only the appropriate equipment was to hand.
I don't eat eggs, so French toast was the first off my list. Way too easy to make it into scrambled eggs stuck onto bread.
See, I eat eggs and toast so that is not great but manageable; the too wet variant is less palatable but usually slithers down the throat fairly quickly, unlike overly thick, dry pancakes.
Pancakes. I want to say French toast because I prefer that, but I've had it too often where the egg cooked and tasted metallic.
French toast
With just this information, French toast now, French toast tomorrow, French toast forever
I remember when you invented "Return of food twitter". At least for one thread, I seem to have invented "Return of food Bluesky"
So satisfying
correct
Is it weird that I like my French toast eggy? Like omelette or scrambies are my first choices because protein but French toast for me is the eggier the better
My favourite piece is usually the last one that I pour the leftover eggy milk mixture over top of.
I like the full range from lightly eggy French toast to "this is basically a custard with some bread in it," so no, I don't think you're weird for this.
We were having a similar conversation last night. I like all of them, but I can't usually eat more than 2 or 3 bites. They're too filling. If I had to choose, though, I'd probably go with French toast.
Waffles (so long as we're talking about waffles made fresh in a waffle iron, and not frozen ones that go in the toaster).
Pancakes. Dont like waffles and French Toast has such wide variation.
Pancakes
Pancakes are the hardest of the three to fuck up badly, at least in my estimation. Nothin beats some really good French Toast, but it's a tall hill to climb.
Waffles - better texture.
Scrambled eggs. Gluten free is a MFer at breakfast...
Probably French Toast. (Do you have real maple syrup?) 🙃
that is outside the bounds of the question, but personally, since discovering the goodness of real maple syrup, I can't stand sugar syrup.
It spoils you forever, & you haunt Costco until their jugs arrive. Another choice? A thin smear of local honey. Honestly, most of the time I would not take any of them if I didn't know the place. Kerby Lane in Austin? Gingerbread pancakes. My place, you want French toast made with oatmeal bread.
We have marionberry syrup but I can’t have much.
due to my allergies, I have to be careful around a lot of berries (so I did not try them when I was in the PNW)
I’m sorry. We do have a lot of nice berries here.
I said French toast initially but y'all are reminding me that swedish pancakes with lingonberries exist.
You can put lingonberries (whole or in a jam) on French toast, too. Actually, add a bit of salt & pepper and you've got some French toast JJ-style. patrickjohanneson.com/2017/01/19/m...
Oh yeah i put lingonberries on lots of things. Swedish pancakes are especially good, tho.
This does not change my initial answer tho. French toast stands a better chance of being good if you don't know anything abiut the cook. Like in cake vs. pie, good cake is the best but bad cake is exponentially worse than bad pie.
Oh, sympathies. I love berries and miss them right now.
Oh, true berry syrup can be lovely. I like fresh fruit with maple syrup--just a couple of lovely thin lines cross the toast/waffles diagonally--and it's perfect. (I know people who like whipped cream, too, my Dad did.) He had a Mickey mouse waffle iron to make for the grandkids and all. :)
Sugar syrup has its place, but that place is NOT on top of breakfast carbs.
The Quebecer in me loves this conversation! Even when my wife and I were students on a limited budget, we still bought maple syrup. And real vanilla extract for baking, the artificial version just doesn’t pass muster.
Ditto. Saved a&scraped for the real thing. For years, Adams made a double vanilla that was the rage for cookies, down south. It was a respected spice line. Ever tried a jar of real vanilla paste? Great way to get the real thing at a less than hysterical price. (Vanilla is labor intensive, so...)
73 years old and TIL that vanilla paste exists! Thanks! 😊
It did, I used to buy it to make sure baking was so worth it. Hope it still does!
Pancakes.
neither
French toast followed closely by waffles, but also the other way around depending on the available toppings.
Waffles, but only because they're the one I don't make for myself.
Waffles!
If I can get all gluten-free, it depends on how hungry I am. French toast if I want something solid, otherwise probably pancakes. I wouldn't actually turn down a waffle and my whims may direct me that way but it's probably the least likely.
Waffles if they're not Belgian. French Toast if it's well soaked.
French toast for me, but I like them all
Pancakes!
In the US, it’d have to be French toast. The other two are considered dessert where I was raised.
French toast because that the closest I can get to eggs. Carbs are not a good breakfast choice for me. I spin up like a top, crash, and am starving an hour later.
Honestly, if the choice is carbs or fast till lunch, I’ll be in better shape fasting.
This has been me since I was a kid. I used to describe pancakes as "they don't stick with you" before I understood white flour Luckily for me I've developed a taste for whole grains, including in pancakes and French toast
If I have to do carbs, my preference is always whole grains, and that definitely cuts the edge, but I still get into trouble. I am very biologically programmed for protein and my blood work always looks much better if I stay in that lane.
Yeah, my breakfast ideal is eggs of some form, a vegetarian sausage, and sauteed greens (spinach or kale). I enjoy carbs and am by no means anti-carb, but if I don't have my carbs with protein I will be in trouble. Hypoglycemia is a symptom not a cause but apparently being prone to it is a thing
I used to run quite well on carbs, but since the Mounjaro, carbs cause me to get the sleepies. I also don't crave them like I used to. That drug is such proof that fat people's bodies literally don't work the same way as thin people's bodies.
Bodies are so weird. I LOVE carbs, it’s just eating them as anything but an accent is genuinely bad for me.
Genuinely bad for everyone in excess, really. I would eat so much sugar and my body was just like, "Great! Thanks for the energy, go eat more!" and I could go full tilt for hours. Meanwhile, my body was also saving all the extra on my ass because WHAT IF THE CARBS STOPPED?!?
It’s not even in excess for me. Basically, any regular eating of pasta or noodle dishes or bread even in moderation is not great for me.
French toast. I might change my choice if I have more specifics, but sight unseen it'll be French toast.
Waffles, then French toast. Pancakes probably have enough baking powder in their mix to trigger my acid reflux.
If they're crepe-thing pancakes, I go with those. If I'm not allowed to know, then waffles. Waffles are the hardest to mess up.
Crepe thing, You make my heart sing, You come with everything, And Nutella. . . .
Crepe-thin! Darned autocorrect.
To be fair, "crepe-thing" sounds entirely Wiswellian, and I'm more than half expecting it to feature in an upcoming novel.
I think we need a crepe-thing story, John, I really believe that.
For Crepe's sake, I think she's right, John
CREPE THING COMES IN THE NIGHT CREPE THING WANTS TO KNOW IF YOU’D LIKE SAVIRY IR SWEET
Pancakes. If nothing else it'll give me a strong hint as to which continent you've got me on.
Pancakes (before I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition that requires me to answer "none of the above.")
Waffles, please
In order waffles, French toast, pancakes But this is a list of my absolute fave breakfasts
Pancakes
Pancakes without hesitation. Well unless the waffles smell awfully good, which can certainly happen
French toast. Love French toast
French toast.
I'd say waffles. They're the most forgiving. I prefer French toast, but bad French toast is worse than bad waffles.
Easy. Pancakes, every time.
Waffles. Love a waffle. Even a disappointing waffle is pretty good.
french toast from these three choices
French toast. Reminds me of my grandma.
French toast!
French toast, absent other details.
Waffles (though it's pretty close with pancakes). French toast only if I trust the person making it (Iove french toast, but bad french toast is awful).
French toast.
Team Pancake.
And I know that if I pick waffles you will probably pick something else so we can share
FRENCH TOAAAST
French toast. Also I just realised I have everything for french toast right now.
so you hate eggs
and croissants
And the porridge erasure is blatant.
If you put porridge in a waffle iron it becomes waffles.
And yet somehow, whether you wanted porridge or waffles, it'll leave you disappointed.
I don’t know why I immediately started hearing that talking toaster from Red Dwarf asking, “Do you want some waffles?” In my mind. You win. What, I don’t know, but you win.
French toast
youtu.be/eDU0CTDMk2g?.... 1. At first, I couldn't believe that no one had posted this yet. 2. Then I remembered that I'm old enough to be nostalgic for the early YouTube days of 2008-2009. 3. Waffles. All day, every day.
If we're having candy for breakfast might as well have a Coke and a Snickers.
Generally, no thank you lol 😅 But if I had to, pancakes.
