Last night I learned of a wild family connection. There is a very successful NFL franchise run by a conservative grandson of a billionaire oil magnate, and whose dad has several sports trophies named after him. His cousin is a trans woman who fronts an experimental black metal band. 🧵
The Kansas City Chiefs are owned by Clark Hunt, a billionaire Republican donor. His dad Lamar Hunt founded the American Football League around 1960, which merged into the NFL 10 years later. You know the AFC, one of the NFL's two conferences? Most of its teams started in the AFL.
He founded many other teams and sports leagues, many of which are very successful today (like MLS). There are two Lamar Hunt trophies, one in the NFL and one in college football. And that's not counting the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, the oldest annual American club soccer tournament.
I'm not even mentioning his other business ventures, like his two theme parks or his ill-fated attempt to corner the silver market that cost him and his brothers a billion dollars.
Lamar's dad (and Clark's grandfather), H. L. Hunt, was a massive oil tycoon and right-wing propagandist, and passed his enormous wealth down to his fifteen children across three wives.
So H.L. ➡️ Lamar ➡️ Clark, who now runs the Kansas City Chiefs and donates to the GOP. But, let's look at another branch of the family. Another one of H.L.'s kids was Helen LaKelly Hunt, who wrote several feminist novels and devised a relationship therapy system with her husband, Harville Hendrix.
Harville wrote several books on relationship therapy, some with his wife Helen. He was frequent guest on the Oprah Winfrey show, appearing 17 times in all.
Helen and Harville had six kids of their own. One is an Occupy activist, one is a writer… And one is Haele Hunt-Hendrix, who formed the experimental black metal band Liturgy. They're really really good.
Haele transitioned in 2020. Her music has heavy mystical overtones, which drive her unique vision of music.
She's also worked in electronic music. It's every bit as rich and ornate as her metal music.
It makes me wonder what Hunt family gatherings are like, when everyone is together. Maybe a little awkward? Anyway, if you want to write a sweeping generational family drama, the Hunts would be a good place to start. And listen to Liturgy, to transcend to another plane. /🧵
