I always thought white americans were afraid of being treated by minorities - if these reach power everywhere - the way they always treated them. Men are also afraid of losing power over women. Some women don't want to be ruled by other women neither.

I think this is certainly a big part of it. I also feel that obviously a large segment of our population believes they were "victims" and it's all our (government, liberals, immigrants, etc) fault. Trump fuels this rhetoric and loves division.
