There is a book called "How Minds Change," by David McRaney, which explores this topic. Asking open-ended questions in a non-judgmental way encourages people to reflect on where their beliefs come from. Interesting read.

I find it works better to ask questions rather than lecture. It often comes down to a hatred of democrats after hearing for years and years how evil they are. So then they have to find reasons to excuse what they don’t like about trump.
