I think the US' treatment of its Iraqi and Afghan allies are a closely related but ultimately separate issue from that of the foreigner who joined the US military normally, went through the normal processes (e.g. boot camp) with the expectation of earning citizenship as a result. But agreed.
They definitely deserve to be protected, but the obligation we owe them is different and for a different reason than that which I would think we owe to a regular member of the US military.
