Take Two was the same assholes who canceled Kerbal Space Program 2 while it was in Early Access, right?

Yes. That one's a bit more convoluted, but the worst part was that they've refused to admit that the project's canceled and continued selling early access at full price even after laying off the entire team. It's *still* up for $50 on Steam.

Probably so they can maintain legality rights to stop anyone from taking the KSP2 data and adding on to or completing the game.

You don't lose IP or copyright by not using it. There are licenses that can revert due to disuse, but T2 straight up purchased KSP from Squad, so no risk of that, and any assets are copyright by T2. Trademarks are more complex, but just keeping a site with logo up would qualify for using it, AFAIK.
