The sweetest. Thanks for the post.
Did you expect to find it in a skyscraper? π€£ lovely photo!
Cool π there's an eye behind it on the rafter π€
That tracks.
Owls are cooler than you think: www.wnycstudios.org/story/quantu...
Where did they live before humans invented barns?
Technically they're called barred owls. The barn part is more of a nickname becoming the real name over time.
Barred is separate species.
They nest in cavities, like these owls in a cliff side. Barns are just easy housing and they hunt in grassy fields, so there's usually a nice food source nearby. bsky.app/profile/mike...
Aaahhh now you've got a theme going BLUE VALENTINE WWHHHOOO
Gotta love the expression of Owls. (Anthropomorphically skewed as it is..)
AI provides the obvious answer: Before barns were built, barn owls likely lived in natural habitats such as high clay cliffs, tree cavities, and other structures like caves. They adapted to human-made environments as agriculture expanded and barns became available for nesting.
A little bit of everywhere. I guess thatβs why they found themselves so comfortable easily in human structures.
This sounds like a chimney swift sort of dilemmaβ¦
@quasi-mediocre.bsky.social Not in a towel but still cute?
When you're that adorable, no towel is required.
Best place for themβ€οΈ

They are my favorites and I want to encounter one of them!

As opposed to an open field....
Well, they spend their nights hunting there.
We don't have them in New England anymore, sadly.
Hello, gorgeous!

Bet there are no rats in that barn!

I heard a very awake barn owl screaming on my roof at 3am last night. It was fantastic! Hope he arrives again tonight!
bsky.app/profile/mike...
Yeah, the first time I had one scream at me scared the crap out of me. It's a little unnerving the first time you hear one!
I'm in the UK so it sounded similar to the American one but a bit more high noted maybe. Guessing we have the Eurasian species. Beautiful listening to it in the dead of night.
Yes, they were once considered subspecies but they separated them into their own species a few years ago after studying the genetics.
Beautiful
Shh don't want to wake up the owl
Does it have large talons?
"Hey, don't you see the sun's coming up? It's time to go to sleep!"
Sooo cute! π₯°
Gorgeous

π€π€I will name him Cinnamon Roll and he must have breakfast with me before he goes to sleep for the rest of the day!πππ
Surprise surprise. Is his name...Barny?
Yada yada and that's how I learned barn owls moved into barns about 5,500 years ago.
Barn owls are the cutest and coolest! πThanks for sharing this! π
Obviously, he or she knows its name. π€
I went to a talk by an orthinologist want to explain to us that it is not a barn owl; correct term is actually a barred owl. He said it's pretty much universally misunderstood.
They're two different species in completely different genuses.
I don't know from species and geniuses; I was just reporting what the orthinologist told us during his talk.

Weird. What was it doing there? :/
I love barn owls! Well, owls in general.
I read this post then scrolled and saw the picture and for some reason I thought this was a picture of a piece of bread for a second...
Nothin like living up to your name...
π»
This reminds me of that weird sci-fi show where the owls ended up being extraterrestrials.
ππ₯°
What a beautiful creature! Marvellous photo!
Mike it's early or late for a Valentine card but I think you have found the perfect symbolic fluffed Valentine heart face for All Time to come: WHOO WHOO Do I Love YOU YOU
Woowoo
Yes, before we built barns they were called Homeless Owls.

Sweet. π₯°
So cute I've never seen a sleepy owl

What a face πβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
Owl fan here.
Obvious barn owl is obvious. I often see western fence lizards on fences. In the West.
Probably out all night hunting lol, such a beautiful animal
what a BEAUTY
Really aren't helping to combat the negative stereotype are they?
I think you're confusing sleep with scrutiny.
I enjoy the pic but still remember how and owl dive bombed my husband twice. No idea why.
They get very territorial during nesting season and are trying to protect the nest. Interestingly, Barred Owls will also get territorial in October as the sunlight is the same as it is during breeding season. Their little owl brains will think it's time to get territorial.
π
Cute baby
omg, π how amazing!
Fork found in kitchen
Imagine that!
Ooo lucky you
Looking so cute
Very nice picture
You would not believe how many barns that I've looked in and never seen a barn owl. Once a turkey vulture but I don't think that counts.
This is at a nature reserve that I volunteer at and they have an owl box here. They've been nesting successfully for years. It's really great!
β€οΈ
very nice, thanks for re-posting.
Strange place to find a βbarnβ owl! Lovely photograph!
