I’d rather that their goal is to govern, and having to win is a byproduct of that, rather than the other way around.

What has been true in Texas for 20 years is trying to lure GOP voters to the other side only alienates your base. They keep trying it and failing.

And I think to some extent it’s because voters can tell when you’re pandering to win elections, rather than running to win so you can govern according to your principles. If you’re willing to throw what you stand for under the bus in order to win, what’s the point in voting for you?

Also, why are people going to vote for GOP-lite when the GOP is right there. So the pandering doesn't really appeal to anyone. You just piss off your base who stays home instead of voting.

Dems have only won during the onset or immediate aftermath of significant Recessions, which occur under Republican presidents; if the people Dems have spent 35 years listening to were giving them good advice to win people over, this wouldn't be the case

and 2012; if you look at polling from 2012, the vast majority of the country still blamed Bush for what they described as an horrific Economy;
