the garage door opener is that which opens the garage door! if the button is the opener, then what's the thing on the ceiling with the belt?

people call the button the opener because it does (indirectly) open the door, and the button's the thing they interact with every day of their lives. the machine may as well be part of the door itself. you don't really notice it doing its job unless something's gone wrong
