A guided inquiry introduction to taxicab geometry for students is in Geometry Labs 9.1 and 9.6. www.mathed.page/geometry-labs An extended version for teachers and everyone is here: www.mathed.page/geometry-lab... #mtbos #iteachmath #mathed
That's really cute, though the arc length explanation could have been better, imo.
Fun article!
What a nice article to wake up to today! Thanks! I've loved your pieces in NYT, still have printouts (somewhere) of the original Joy of X series...
Thanks so much, Karen!
an inviting structure!! hopefully (well: my hope) is that some accompanying problems emerge along w the topic ... 🚕 could simply be from an unaffiliated reader who e.g. posts a few taxicab challenges on bsky ... 🚖
Thanks, Benjamin. Yes, I agree about accompanying problems. Patrick Honner is creating some activities for NYT Learning Network for each of the four installments. But it would be great for others to join in too!
yessss hopes manifesting in live time 🙌🏻
It's quite nice to explore loci with the metric too. What does a 'parabola' look like? (Defined here as the set of points equidistant from a line and a point. Especially interesting if your line is oblique).
Nah. Never gonna read that paper again. This ChatGPT lawsuit is total BS and they have no right to see my chats with it.
We called that the Manhattan distance when I worked on a distance estimation system around 2005 for .. taxi cabs, lol. Since it was used for relative comparisons, estimates were fine as long as they were consistent.
This is definitely very cool for math pedagogy. I like the format. Keep providing those gift links and we'll keep reading... 😹
