Although I was always amazed at how little the 90s Treks crossed over. The only real thread that requires you to watch things in order is the withdrawl of the Cardassians from Bajor and the setting up of the Maquis. That went from TNG to DS9 back to TNG then VOY then back to DS9.
Aside from that we got, what? Bashir hanging around with Data whilst he took a nap? Riker pressuring Quark for information over a viewscreen?
Oh yeah, you don't get a lot of Name character crossovers, but you get recurring secondary characters and concepts and remembered events and background aliens so they still feel like the same world. In the new stuff, nobody else ever had Saru's species show up even as background aliens!
