Does anyone know what the purpose is for those little zigzags in a spider’s web?

I was sitting in the garden,watching this spider for a while. There are so many large bees in the garden right now, and I thought so many were going to bust right in through that web, but every bee I saw avoided that web, so I’m going to go with the “visibility” theory for the zig-zags.

LOL! The carpenter bees are huge. I don’t think that spider’s web would stand a chance. The spider is adding a “do not enter” sign, for them,specifically. 😆
