Who ever said it could alone?
Correct me if I am wrong, but 17.6% of anthropogenic emissions is not small potatoes, right? I mean, nobody was claiming high double digit numbers, or am I wrong? Also, if we free up 3 billion hectares of land for ecosystem restoration by cutting out meat & dairy, maybe that number goes up?
But climate change isn't the only potentially catastrophic problem civilization is facing, and biodiversity loss is itself potentially civilization-ending. Saving and restoring ecosystems is worthwhile on its own. Plus, ecosystems help balance global systems in ways beyond carbon sequestration.
And, the inverse is also true: stopping climate change won't stop the other catastrophes we are barreling towards. Mass extinction event. Microplastics. The planetary water cycles destabilizing. Land degradation. And all the other realms identified by the Stockholm resilience group.
Climate is just one of 6 areas where we have already crossed thresholds of the planet's capacity to withstand the harms civilization is inflicting. But also, it's not like anyone in power in dominant nations is even thinking of restoring ecosystems at this point
