Burning fossil fuels disrupts the long-term (geological) carbon cycle. eg. Forming the plant material to make ONE typical coal seam took ~100,000 years of photosynthesis in ancient forests. To understand how climate change is caused by fossil fuels, one thing you need to be aware of is Deep Time.
