Couple of things: 1) the name Massapequa isn't the "Native American" word for anything. It's an Algonquin word, one of hundreds of Native American tribes with their own language. That's like saying that "water" is the European word for the substance that makes up the ocean.

2) It's not about "honoring" the Native Americans who once lived there and named the place. If it were, the mascot/logo wouldn't be wearing the headdress of a tribe thousands of miles away.

3) It's really incredibly ironic how bent out of shape people get about these types of names and traditions being taken away when they are only in a position to do so because the land and customs of the people they seek to "honor" was once taken away in an even more meaningful and life-altering way
