Transformers Pretender Jazz! A Caucasian Jazz feels all kinds of wrong (I suppose it is a good disguise!) but the shell is actually a cool design. Sadly the same can’t be said for the inner bot, which is shit. When I got Euro Classics Jazz he replaced the crap inner bot & stole the shell & small gun

Transformers Pretender Jazz - a surprisingly pale dude in snazzy blue techno armour wielding two really cool guns The shell hangs out with the terrible inner robot. Poor Jazz cant actually see past his chest (prototypes suggest that you were actually supposed to take the car front off and put it on backwards but that looks even worse Aiming his awesome guns Car mode isn’t actually too bad (better when fully stickered) but it doesn’t excuse the bot mode

Bit of a shame how at this point Marvel Productions artists just kinda gave up on making good models. Pretty much began tracing the toys.

My fav thing about that model is it features the only animated appearance of Sludge’s rifle! bsky.app/profile/slig...

OOH! That's a great spot! I kept forgetting that they used missile launcher for Sludge instead of his actual rifle.

It’s difficult to be 100% given the fleeting glimpses we get but I’m pretty sure that the other Pretender Classics models have the stand-in weapons from the same protos. Though Marvel didn’t use the bot models they did use the shells & you can see Bumblebee using a PM Prime gun & SS using Snaptrap’s

A shot from the 1989 catalogue showing the Classic Pretenders using stand-in guns. Robot bee has a Nautilator gun painted black, shell has a cut-down Powermaster Prime rifle. Jazz robot has Sludge gun, shell uses a Snapdragon gun painted white. Starscream shell uses Snaptrap’s rifle. Grimlock escapes getting a stand-in as this proto shell doesn’t have any fist holes! Another shot of those protos from the 1991 Euro catalogue A shot of Bumblebee’s rifle from “Yesterday’s Heroes” compared to Powermaster Prime’s rifle (top) and the actual Pretender Bumblebee rifle (bottom). Note the laser sight and long barrel that matches PM Prime Starscream’s shell using a rifle that looks very much like Snaptrap’s and not much like his own

Weirdly enough, Pretender Bumblebee is barehanded:

Yep, another thing that makes the task harder! Also I’m not entirely convinced the gun you can very briefly see in Starscream’s shell’s hand matches the comic Snaptrap-inspired gun, so who knows. Hopefully some more models will turn up one day to clarify things

Annoyingly Budiansky seems to have models even from this period, but kept only few scans, so it's all up to Sorenson to make them public (he scanned them). Annoyingly cuz almost two decades went by and Budiansky doesn't have enough free time to scan them himself...

Just so sad. So much stuff like this still exists yet one fire, one flood, one corrupted hard drive and it’s all gone

Confirming this is made much harder by nearly every Marvel artist who drew the Classic Pretenders being prone to making up generic guns rather than use the model sheet ones. Even arch copier Delbo strayed from the model sheets on occasion!
