"Canadians" did not treat Indigenous people any better than the US or Australia did. Let's not forget these countries were all colonies of imperialist Britain.
We lacked the black slaves to hate so we did it to natives. I've been married to a beautiful First Nations lady for 40 yrs and have been witness to the discrimination held by too many, still, especially amongst the older folk. Mistakes of the past don't have to be mistakes in our future.
Black folks' experience in this country is not much better. Racism in this country is perhaps more covert than the US (at least it used to be), but there is no mistake that it is very much alive and well in Canada.
We weren't very welcoming of any non whites. South Asians and Asians were discriminated against in a way that I'm ashamed of. I didn't speak up, despite being raised better than that. We are too mixed to discriminate. I'm older and wiser than that now.
