I'm not really sure. I don't believe in the 'great man' (or horrible man, in this case) theory. They were filling a niche that someone else might have filled. (Especially Swaggert. As scummy as he was, he wasn't exactly unique.) Perhaps the right wing blight might not be as pervasive.

I think it would have happened eventually, although perhaps not as quickly. Those voices were just feedback mechanisms that amplified what was already there. They didn't originate fear and hatred, but they happily fanned it for their own rewards. Without them, it may have just smouldered longer.
