It has only been a couple of decades since it has been safe to be “out”. Prior to that it was perfectly socially acceptable and in most cases legal to evict, fire, even assault the f-words. What she did endangered those people’s lives and futures. It is one of the worst things anyone could do.
One of my closest friends in Middle School/HS died by suicide during his 2nd year at UC Davis. He was afraid to come out to his friends and family. His friends all kind of knew and figured he would tell us when he was comfortable. I still miss him.

In the early 2000's my ex and I lived in a great building where most of the other tenants were gay men/couples. We were all drinking on the roof deck one warm night and it came out that they all had been out since middle school. That felt like a very good thing.
