A screenshot of one of those infuriating “we asked 7 Americans” bits in the NYT where presumably representative citizens spout the most ridiculous pablum. And you can’t do anything about it! Those people exist in the real world and continue to vote! You can’t convince them of anything because the exigencies of American life have failed to inculcate them with any sensible perspective up to this point in their lives. You’re left with an empty and hopeless feeling as you wonder how anyone could have opinions like “well, some of the protesters had Mexican flags and that just turned my stomach” or “well, it may seem harsh to physically abuse people, but the fact of the matter is they probably deserve it.” You wonder if anyone at the NYT thinks the format is informative or whether they really just want to fill the reading populace with a sense of anomie and dread.
