In 1922 Sir Malcolm Campbell hit an unofficial land-speed record of 138.8mph in a borrowed 18-litre Sunbeam. He bought the car, renamed it #Bluebird and drove into the #history books at 145.16mph in 1924 in south Wales. 2/4

Sample of our Marske-By-The-Sea 1927 map, showing a wide stretch of beach and river inlets, as well as a small part of the village to the edge of a little cliff.

Lieutenant W E Johns was based here for a time as a flying instructor, notable crashing into a fellow officer’s back door, before later going on to write the #Biggles stories. Also paying a flying visit was Captain Roy Brown, the man credited with shooting down the Red Baron. 3/

These days, such speeds and shenanigans will at the very least get you a speeding ticket and an entry into a policeman’s notebook, but the area is still worth a quick trip, accompanied by a few of our #historic #maps, priced from just £3.50 plus postage. (Printed map is clearer than sample) 4/4
