If 25% of the non-doms leave the UK, the new tax regime will gain the UK’s coffers nothing. If half leave, the government will have a £12.2 billion ($14.3 billion) hole to fill.

The rich (people & companies) like to think they can leave a country if in their mind taxation becomes too burdensome. But they still make their money in the country they've left. Tax that. And add an onerous tax if they make money in a country where they do not reside. Sounds simple. Maybe it is...
thank you @bylinetimes.bsky.social for showing us which ‘News’ organisations act in bad faith. What a load of twaddle.
This headline as with so many others is based on a report from Henley & Partners, a firm that talks up the departures of millionaires because its business is helping the departure of millionaires. Their statistics don’t stack up. Less than 2% of millionaires have moved as a result of tax changes.
The only accurate statistics on non-Dom residency predate the tax changes www.gov.uk/government/s...
I once went to a party way out of my social circle - CEOs, Art Dealers, movie producers, etc. Every conversation eventually turned to tax avoidance. Some had even chosen to live 180 days in another country away from their children so they could lower their tax rate. They are obsessed with taxes.
I do AV. A lot of Those gigs are wealth managers. Can confirm
And if they pay all their tax, they're still going to end up better off than almlost everyone else.
No it won't.
This is such an old and sad argument. The rich always say that they are good for the economy & create employment etc. American Republicans say the same. Of course it's true. BUT even the lowest paid worker contributes to the economy! They should ALL pay tax proportionly to their ability and income!
Why taxing the rich less makes absolutely NO SENSE! In every country the same BS arguments: "but what if all the billionaires leave the country?!" As if a billionaire has "his money" within the country on a bank account, wtf
Right? And why is everyone so eager to keep them around anyway?
Fuck you, eat the oligarchs
Err no reply to the gaslighting
Did a billionaire write this?
Billionaire linked business
Billionaires' lickspittles then.
Yes, they even have their own party, Reform which advocates the same tax avoidance.
We've had much higher taxation for the wealthy in the past and they didn't leave. Because not one will suffer one iota if they have to pay taxes. They literally will not notice any difference to their lifestyle.
So you’re saying we should introduce a wealth tax on assets held here, and a tax on where corporate profits are made rather than where they are registered to solve that problem? Great idea!
Non doms only pay tax on U.K. earnings. If they left, that earnings potential doesn’t just disappear as this sort of narrative suggests. It would be taken up by others. This is typical billionaire disinformation.
I mean, come on, let's inject a bit of honesty. "Non-doms". Not domiciled in UK. So how can they *leave* the UK? Unless it's some kind of scam and they actually live here... And aren't they "non-doms" precisely *because* they are avoiding paying tax in UK?
They can always relocate to the minimal tax laws of the Middle East, where I’m sure they’ll appreciate their respect for human rights.
Their wealth comes from us. If billionaires don’t want to pay the tax on the wealth they’ve extracted from us and our economy, they are quite welcome to fuck off and not extract wealth from us and our economy. It’s very much a two-way street, that.
Hear, hear.
It’s a global race to the bottom, unfortunately. Thankfully, wealthy individuals don’t always consider tax as their main reason for choosing a place to live. If they did, they’d all be living in Dubai.
So offer other things like stability, happiness and a clean environment.
The figures seem astonishingly high - let’s see the workings Can we ask “more or less”
The Laffer Curve is some fantasy bullshit a drunk drew on a cocktail napkin
Maybe those non-doms could have a good long think, and decide to contribute towards a fair and equal society, no? I mean, nobody ever frames this for what it is; extremely wealthy people hoarding wealth and denying funds to the public purse. Why?
So let’s try 24% and see how it goes - ‘cos the Harsmworth’s et al aren’t exactly contributing to the good of the nation
The greedy rich are the very worst of the world. Imagine the good they could do if they just paid their taxes.... like the rest of us do!
Try taking those Belgravia properties and Scottish estates on your way out of the door. It’ll take more than a removal’s van.
Yeah. Sad. Byeee
This is such a lie! Kissing the asses of the wealthy NEVER helps anybodys economy and they NEVER bail when you raise their taxes. This is a scam, because anyone who leaves their own country because of taxes is going to have to pay taxes wherever the decide to end up and who wants them anyway?
If we tax their fixed assets that can't leave the country with them ....
Bullshit meter: peaked
Perhaps write articles on the responsibility and privilege of paying taxes. Take responsibility to build cultures of altruism and gratitude. Start holding people in esteem who are deserving.
Well then eat the rich....
Let’s try it and see at least. Fuck the rich. My hope is all developed countries take headlines on taxing those pricks so they eventually can’t run anywhere. Also, wonder who owns Bloomberg News and whether they would have an interest in tax rates for the wealthy………….
None of them are going anywhere. Their corrupt, thieving fingers are in too deep here to uproot and move. Besides, they like the scene, they like the snobbishness even though genuinely posh people treat them and their nouveau-riches with utter and justifiable contempt.
Why lie and make stuff up. There has been no exodus. Typical right wing propaganda to try and scare people into letting the Rich not pay tax and hoard the countries wealth taxjustice.net/press/millio...
