Bloomberg News @bloomberg.com

If 25% of the non-doms leave the UK, the new tax regime will gain the UK’s coffers nothing. If half leave, the government will have a £12.2 billion ($14.3 billion) hole to fill.

The rich (people & companies) like to think they can leave a country if in their mind taxation becomes too burdensome. But they still make their money in the country they've left. Tax that. And add an onerous tax if they make money in a country where they do not reside. Sounds simple. Maybe it is...

This headline as with so many others is based on a report from Henley & Partners, a firm that talks up the departures of millionaires because its business is helping the departure of millionaires. Their statistics don’t stack up. Less than 2% of millionaires have moved as a result of tax changes.

I once went to a party way out of my social circle - CEOs, Art Dealers, movie producers, etc. Every conversation eventually turned to tax avoidance. Some had even chosen to live 180 days in another country away from their children so they could lower their tax rate. They are obsessed with taxes.

This is such an old and sad argument. The rich always say that they are good for the economy & create employment etc. American Republicans say the same. Of course it's true. BUT even the lowest paid worker contributes to the economy! They should ALL pay tax proportionly to their ability and income!

Why taxing the rich less makes absolutely NO SENSE! In every country the same BS arguments: "but what if all the billionaires leave the country?!" As if a billionaire has "his money" within the country on a bank account, wtf

We've had much higher taxation for the wealthy in the past and they didn't leave. Because not one will suffer one iota if they have to pay taxes. They literally will not notice any difference to their lifestyle.

So you’re saying we should introduce a wealth tax on assets held here, and a tax on where corporate profits are made rather than where they are registered to solve that problem? Great idea!

Non doms only pay tax on U.K. earnings. If they left, that earnings potential doesn’t just disappear as this sort of narrative suggests. It would be taken up by others. This is typical billionaire disinformation.

I mean, come on, let's inject a bit of honesty. "Non-doms". Not domiciled in UK. So how can they *leave* the UK? Unless it's some kind of scam and they actually live here... And aren't they "non-doms" precisely *because* they are avoiding paying tax in UK?
