And don't forget that when Bugner beat Henry Cooper in 1971 there was a torrent of racism over this upstart immigrant magyar beating our 'Enery. Harry Carpenter's tv commentary was a disgrace. Oh yes, that shit was as prevalent then as it is currently.

I genuinely don't remember any racism in the response to Bugner. He was resented for beating long-time hero Cooper, but as a boxing/politics fan at the time, the racism seems to have passed me by.

I remember my mother pointing out at various points through the seventies how he was reported as British when he was winning and a Hungarian immigrant when he was losing.
