Every time we pass one of those buildings I say to my husband “that building used to be full of mechanical switching equipment. Now there’s a Mac mini routing all the calls.”

Many of those old COs were built during the Cold War to (supposedly) withstand a nuclear attack.

I want to say is was in mid 90's, he's passed so I can't call him to confirm, but my brother had a team of 8 guys that pulled fiber optics through the entire Pentagon. It took them right around 4 years to do the whole building.
