I’d keep chickens but it’s one of the things that’s prohibited in our deeds. That and building a steam engine, apparently. You’ve got to love old houses.

Shame, I'm guessing that rules out steam powered chicken robots too?
We used to have chickens. Had about 20 at one point. Poland's were good layers, so much so we were giving away dozens and dozens of eggs this time of year. Also ran two incubators 24/7 and hatched about sixty chicks every three or so weeks.
My dad grew veg in our back garden when I was young. So we always had fresh tomatoes and whatnot. He was a much better gardener than I am. When they moved from Manchester to Norfolk he ended up with a good sized allotment plot. Used to love helping him out up there when I was visiting.
There was a lady there that kept hens. And the growers all used to swap their produce. I don’t think they bought eggs or veg at all during the summer months. Oh, and there was Mick, who used to do a bit of poaching…
Yea my dad had an allotment and grew all sorts. Tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, onions, runner beans, peas, cabbages, sprouts, the lot. It's not something I could ever get into. I did take exception to him hanging his strings of onions on my bike in the shed. It looked like a Frenchman's one. 🤨
Side note: because of the food lying around, they do attract rats. 😬
There was a covenant on our old place that also said no chickens, weird isn't it. We just picked some apples today for a crumble, got some pears and blackberries too. Steam engines though, that's REALLY harsh :)
For a second I thought you'd blend in chicken meat in your apple crumble. But hey, why not?
