Saw a recruitment ad that had a starting salary around $52k at G7 level for ICE Agents. In SoCal you could flip burgers at In and Out with 2 weeks paid vacay, insurance and other benefits for that. A whole lot less stress and you're working with happy customers for the most part.

Which ICE are they talking about? The real Federal agents who've been on the job for years, or the sadistic rabble recently brought in? I wouldn't have characterized the latter group as being as introspective as this passage describes.
