Love this chair.
Yeah she sat in it all the time. It was tough to sell it but even after decades of use it was still valuable and I live across the country.
Very cool!!!
I live mid-century design too . I'm a huge fan of Frank Lloyd wright design. My home furnishings reflect it also.
It’s a good times for the Eames. The Eames house has just reopened. news.artnet.com/art-world/ea...
Yes!!!
Very cool!
Fantastic! I have to see that!
I used to live in Novato, then Petaluma and drove past that building all the time...
Very cool! 🥰
I love this. The building has fascinated me since I was a child
Wow!
I saw this earlier and am so excited!
Novato! You can stop at Hopmonk Brewery and get Death & Taxes on tap and pretty damned good rueben.
Shshshshsh!🍻
VERY COOL!
That will be really cool.
I lived in Novato in the latter half of the Eighties (nice town, close to Point Reyes when in the mood, or the city). Our company was the distributor for Herman Miller (made Eames chair) in Europe and the Middle East.
Good stuff!
Feeling the need to comment again since I just watched the video. Not *once* did the reporter mention the origin of the building or its architects. Birkenstock was ‘its second act’. This is just really lazy journalism. From SFgate:
That’s what I remember, McGraw-Hill.
I didn't even know it was the Birkenstock building. To me it's the McGraw Hill textbook division. (It's been a minute ...) Very excited it's being so perfectly repurposed!
Same! My mom would have been thrilled to know an Eames museum was planned to take over the space.
Yes, book publishers. I think I just barely recall Birkenstock. Great Marin Lore.
Yep. I grew up in Novato. This was always the McGraw Hill building, an art piece in itself. Fantastic that it will live on in such a perfect way.
Same. I had no idea it was Birkenstock.
I’ve always loved this building! So glad to see it’s going to good use.
I remember that as a textbook distributor. Probably one of its many iterations. Very near Lucasfilm
McGraw-Hill I think. Skywalker ranch is out that way I think
I will definitely visit!
Oh most definitely 🙂
So glad it didn't become a Amazon warehouse
Shit! Was that an option on the table?
always.
I don't know if it was but I always was afraid it would be
I have driven by it scores of times, when it was inhabited, and when empty. I am thrilled that its amazing design will be used to showcase amazing design.
Palm Springs, CA is all mid century homes. You can’t build a 2 story home all homes are mid century modern. Modernism week is every year there. youtu.be/APuDmAb8wbU?... twice a year.
I’m fortunate enough to live in a mid-century modern home.
I grew up in a mid century home also. I loved it.
I’ve seen a lot of them in Cupertino, Norwalk and Altadena as well.
Ah, the blockchain nomads are spreading.
This is very exciting news!
For decades I've been keen on mid-century Eichler homes (mostly) of California--their simplicity, openness, post-and-beam build, communal design.
I always love seeing it when I drive by. I'm happy it will be used, preserved, and a good place for folks to get out to.
I always loved driving past the"pointy fingernail building" as a child, then adult.... I can't wait to be able to go inside it!
I can't wait to see it. I've driven past the building a gazillion times. If you go there, there's also a fabulous Frank Lloyd Wright, the Marin County Civic Center.
Cool. I didn't know the bldg had a name. I always called it the nun's bldg because the pointy bits looked like the peaks of a nun's habit.
For us Bay Area kids actually born in the 60s raised in the 70s, this will always be McGraw-Hill textbooks building. I’ve always loved this building and I’m glad to hear it Will have a new life.
Those textbooks shaped our childhood brains like blockchain molds code.
That's awesome. I'm glad they're not going to change it up much since that hawk looked to be right at home perched on the roof. Looks like it would also prove to be a decent place to watch birds as well!
📌 definitely want to see this!
Kool
What a fabulous use of the building. I temped there when it was McGraw Hill, and know it as the Birkenstock building.
I’m going to Taliesin on Sunday. My friend is a guide there. I’ll post pictures!
I drive past it all the time and wonder what they’re going to do with it. This is better than I could have imagined ❤️❤️❤️
Looks promising!
That's some very nice news. Gives me something to look forward to!
That’s exacting news.
I love great architecture and design. I had no idea about this. Thanks for sharing!
Ooh, I'll definitely add that to my bucket list. I love Eames design!
Happy to hear it has a new owner I look forward to seeing it every time I pass it
Very cool
Just drove by this yesterday. Still had a ‘for sale’ sign up. Happy it was sold and will now be an Eames Museum. Novato isn’t exactly a ‘global destination,” though.
Are you kidding? Neither was Napa — and Novato is on the way.
Such good news!!!! I look forward to visiting! 😊
Very cool
I've been driving past this building for years. As a designer I am so happy to see it will be come a design museum.
Love that building! So glad to see that it's going to be in good hands!
Cool 😎 👏
I live in the area. Glad that finally there’s a new tenant in there!
