I just showed someone from the St. Louis suburbs around my neighborhood today and she loved how we could just WALK to stores and restaurants from our home. Great weather too.

Take the train in the Friday before the air show and walk the river walk to Navy Pier. Planes practice all day. 4 pm the sonic booms start as the big planes swoop over the city. Take the water taxi back to Union Station. Legal to bring prosecco onto the train :)

I lived in the northwest suburbs of Chicago for a long time. My favorite thing to do was hop on the Metro train and go downtown for the day. Walk around the parks, go to the beach, go to a blues club. Chicago is a wonderful city. ❤️❤️

Ive been to cities all over the world, Chicago is one of the best places to be in the summer. There’s a festival in the street every weekend. The lake is great for sailing and swimming. The food is amazing. The music is fantastic. All happens outdoors in the street.

I was amazed at how much I enjoyed Chicago in the short time I was there. NYC is "my" city, but Chicago definitely has its own charm.

Next time you come here, take a ride on the Blue Line to really see the neighborhoods. It's a beautiful way to experience the city from the elevated tracks.

Former Hoosier here. You know how many times I've been to Chicago since I was little in the 70s? Tons, never had a problem. Have driven, have taken public transportation, flown in & out. I've had friends who live there never have a problem. So dumb.

I remember when I lived in NYC that some visitors seemed intimidated by the city & stayed in high tourist areas which aren't all that interesting, so they didn't really get to interact w/ regular New Yorkers. Being negative about something is often just a defensive reaction & the GOP feeds that.

People fear what they don’t know. The choice is to either challenge your discomfort and learn or give in to your fear and avoid. If you don’t live in the immediate region of a big city it’s easy to avoid ever challenging that fear.

I remember numerous times when I ran into visitors and I'd ask them if they needed help. If they were into it, I'd suggest a couple of more charming things that they could do that they might like. So many ppl commented on how nice ppl in the city were. I think this is often true in cities. Once

a person gets over feeling intimidated, they become part of the city & are included in many many aspects of it. I always tried to be a good host to visitors b/c I knew that there was were "bad city" rumors spread on right wing media.

Parking is tough. But that’s why we have the CTA (and Metra and Pace). The public transportation network takes most people where they need to go. Or, if you don’t want to take public transit, you can walk, ride a bike, or take a cab. It is not that difficult to get around.

It has / has had pretty high crime rates. Gun violence. It is better now. I lived there for a while. While mess may sound harsh, “mess” =high violent crime. To be fair, it’s usually among gangs & concentrated in specific areas.

The South Side (near Hyde Park/UChicago) has a mall with a stone & iron gate around it w/a police station in the middle monitoring a parking lot at walgreens. That didn’t materialize as preventative, but rather as a response to crime - likely property crime (vehicle vandalism).

DC is the same. When Reagan was in office, they had a very high violent crime rate. It got better with their gun ban. Then Robert’s reversed that law in the (I think it was) second Obama admin, Violence increased momentarily. Then went back down.

When my son’s dad went back to his home country, then labeled the most violent non war country and had two cities dubbed the murder capital of the world, I looked into growing up in Miami during Griseldas cocaine cowboys, and I was raised in the murder capital of the🌎 🌍 at the time.

I visited Chicago in 2022, the last time I was in the US. I travelled alone, got the train from the airport, walked all over the city visiting various sites, went for several runs (alone) along the lake shore. Never once felt even vaguely threatened or ill at ease. Thought it was a lovely city.

I’ve worked in London most of my life but grew up and live in rural England.
