i think Darren Aronofsky is a good director who keeps trying to prove he's a great one, and it brings down every movie of his i've seen. (Except The Wrestler, I think, although it's been a while.)

i'm also one of those hyper picky critics who doesn't think "taking a big swing" is automatically a virtue--or, even if it is, it doesn't make up for all other flaws.
I appreciate filmmakers who take big swings as opposed to playing it safe, but if they don’t connect, they need to called out for that.
I was always a half-hearted defender of his but The Whale was so misbegotten that it made me wonder if every criticism of him was actually correct. I loved The Wrestler and Black Swan though, haven't revisited either recently
