Folks should also be aware that the newer shingles vaccine (Shingrix-two doses) is significantly superior to the old one. My mother had the old one, and still got shingles. I'm sure it mitigated the severity of her shingles – which was still pretty bad – but apparently the new one is a rockstar.
The old shingles vaccine began to wane after a few years. That may be why your mother got shingles despite the jab. So sorry that happened to her. Shingrix is more effective & lasts longer, may even turn out to last a lifetime.
Cool, thanks. So will they determine how long it will last by doing antibody tests regularly on a group of subjects who got the vaccine? And are the antibody tests meaningful? 
The mfgr does not claim Shingrix will last a lifetime, but effectiveness is falling over time notably slower than Zostavax. The researchers are the ones to pose your questions to about the details of their methods.
The same is true with the Measles vaccine. Early vaccines were made from inactivated virus instead of a live attenuated virus. If vaccinated before 1968, ask your doctor if you need a booster. www.npr.org/sections/sho...
Makes sense. I think an alternative is having an antibodies test that can show if you can resist the virus.
This is true. The point is ask your doctor if you are in that age group. My doctor had me get a booster shot. My sister had the antibody test.
Thanks. I'm of an age that I'm probably okay, but I wish my mother had remembered whether I had measles or not. Also, none of us should have to worry about measles. If there weren't lunatics like Kennedy out there, the population would be vaccinated to the point where the risk is virtually zero.
